New Roof for the Johnston House
It
wasn't as much of a roof-raising as a roof replacing. After two years
of planning, a new roof went on the house in a dry spell in February.
Hallmark Roofing of Belmont did the work using shingles approved by the
State Office of Historic Preservation - made of redwood. Once crafted,
the shingles had to be sent north to be treated with fire retardant.
Fortunately, the roof leaked mostly into the Foundation's office at the
rear of the house. Screens on the vents were installed to keep birds
from flying down them to the warm interior - that didn't work for the
birds or the house.
